Today was the launch of my loosely titled "Free 4x6' Photo Print Giveaway!" experiment and it was pretty successful. Every Sunday afternoon there's a big ad-hoc drum circle at the local park near my apartment, Meridien Hill Park. There are a few organizers that set the general tone of the affair and regulate general behaviors, but for the most part its simply a gathering point for people of all walks of life to hang out, dance, catch up and unwind before the drudgeries of Monday.
Naturally, this sort of scene is ripe for photos and I have been one of the many photographers that passes through on a fairly regular basis. I used to play the drums every Sunday too but my roommate left DC and took his drum with him, so that's the end of that.
Anyway, I was taking a break from the action on a nice Sunday afternoon in April when I noticed the sheer number of photographers making their way through the scene. I think it's great when photogs share their work and info with those that partake in the drum circle and I have a feeling that a good portion of the subjects see their photos at some point in time.
I came to the realization that I wasn't quite doing my part in giving back to this small, relatively tight knit community of Sunday revelers so I concocted a plan. I didn't want my photos to simply be 'liked' by the people that gather at Meridien Hill Park every Sunday on some newsfeed (although that's always nice), I wanted my photos on their refrigerators. Physically shown off by the people that bring them to life.
So I made 5 prints of 15 photos I took that April afternoon, put them in a makeshift display box, marked them "Free!" and set them amongst all the action at tonight's hangout.
People were slow to catch on at first, but once a few people started looking through everything it caught on quick with all but a few strays left over when I finally split for the night.
Main takeaway: Get your photos on peoples fridges!
