Happy Accidents
There are a lot of happy accidents in photography. Bizarre light effects, unplanned photo bombers, an errant white balance setting that inadvertently turns the mundane into something out of the ordinary, a background that puts the subject in a surprising context once the image is reviewed hours, days, months or year after, etc.
Street photography lends itself well to happy accidents. Most of street seems like an accident anyway. You notice the development of a peculiar scene, some night light moves in and - ZANG - freeze the moment and figure it out latter.
This guy was entranced by his tattered Bible. I was standing right over him and knew I had to try to grab a frame when the metro stopped. Unfortunately my exposure guestimate was pretty off so it looks like he's just reviewing a planner, and in my haste I failed to fully advance my film.
It was pretty disapointing to review the roll immediately after developing and see that I blew the shot but looking back at it, I kind of like the idea of a studious Bible reader standing over the superimposed image of another passerby.
File this one in the "almost" folder.
